In March 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic struck the United States and put in motion the critical need for accurate and timely data.. It became apparent that the much of the country's health system was going face a significant demand for bed capacity as it responded to the COVID-19 pandemic. Data was critical in the early days the country's response and we had limited insight into total hospital bad capacity and critical resource supply within each state.
Realizing the need to coordinate quickly across the state's hospitals and health systems, a group of health systems in Oregon agreed to standup a real-time bed capacity system using the GE Healthcare "command center" technology as a foundation. There was agreement among this group and the Oregon Capacity System (OCS) was launched. It quickly became a useful tool for providers and the state of Oregon in understanding hospital capacity in real-time by emergency response region. In a couple of months time we had nearly 100% of Oregon's hospitals participating.
Given the early success and the clear need for an enhanced statewide system, using the lessons we have all learned from the pandemic, Apprise Health Insights in partnership with GE, launched a vision for a statewide tool, the first in the country, to develop a collaborative process with shared governance to bring additional data streams a central dashboard for decision making and can be replicated across the country.
The Capacity System, accessible via a gated, secure website, supports near real-time capacity management, providing hospital and regional decision makers with access to up-to-date hospital data on the availability of beds and ventilators as well as COVID-19 census and admission trends.
It supports decision making around patient routing, resource allocation as well as policy setting. The information on the website is updated every 5 minutes, directly from the hospitals’ EMRs and without any need for manual reporting. It is designed to scale easily across multiple regions, states, etc.
